Trip to Scotland

Orkney Islands

Once we finished our fantastic breakfast of toast and coffee at the hotel we were treated to a wild ride in a beat up mini van to John O'Grouts. We broke a spring in the guys van on the way.

Funny sign Just thought this sign was too funny!
It was cold - and the wind was crazy. There was almost a constant drizzle during our stay in the highlands. Apparently that's pretty much the norm. The tour guide told us that there's only about a 15degree difference in temperature between mid summer and mid winter. However, during the summer there's only three hours of dark - during the winter there's only three hours of daylight. I don't know how they function!

Our tour of Ornkey started by boarding a ferry at John O'Grouts. Did I say it was cold?

our ferry

From the ferry we boarded a bus to be taken around Orkney. Our driver/tour guide was a comical guy who's accent was so thick that half the time we couldn't understand him.

Churchill Barriers were built to prevent the enemy from using the spaces between the islands of Orkney to get from the North Sea into Scapa Flow during times of war.
